How the Illinois Paycheck Calculator Works
Enter your annual salary or hourly wage and select how often you receive your paycheck. You can choose weekly, biweekly, semi-monthly or monthly pay.
Then select your federal filing status and enter applicable Illinois exemptions. You can also enter pre-tax deductions, post-tax deductions and additional federal withholding.
The calculator estimates federal income tax, Illinois income tax, Social Security and Medicare before calculating your estimated net paycheck.
Illinois Income Tax Rate 2026
The Illinois individual income tax rate is 4.95% for 2026. Illinois calculates its individual income tax using a flat rate on Illinois taxable base income after applicable exemptions and adjustments.
The Illinois Department of Revenue states that the individual income tax rate is 4.95%, and the 2026 withholding tables also use a 4.95% rate.
Illinois Personal Exemption 2026
For tax year 2026, the Illinois personal exemption allowance is $2,925 per exemption. The exemption can be affected by income and other eligibility rules.
For example, Illinois provides different exemption treatment depending on filing status and whether the taxpayer can be claimed as a dependent. Additional exemptions can also apply for qualifying taxpayers.
Federal Taxes on an Illinois Paycheck
Illinois residents who earn wages generally have federal taxes withheld in addition to Illinois state income tax. Your federal withholding depends on your income, filing status, Form W-4 information, deductions and credits.
The federal 2026 standard deduction is $16,100 for single filers and married individuals filing separately, $24,150 for heads of household and $32,200 for married couples filing jointly or qualifying surviving spouses.
Social Security Tax in Illinois
Social Security is a federal payroll tax and is generally withheld from qualifying employee wages in Illinois. The 2026 employee Social Security rate is 6.2%.
For 2026, the Social Security wage base is $184,500. Wages above that annual limit are not subject to the employee Social Security tax.
Medicare Tax in Illinois
The standard employee Medicare tax rate for 2026 is 1.45%. Unlike Social Security, Medicare has no annual wage-base limit.
Employers generally begin withholding the additional 0.9% Medicare tax when an employee’s wages exceed $200,000 during the calendar year.

Weekly vs. Biweekly Pay
A weekly employee normally receives 52 paychecks per year, while a biweekly employee normally receives 26. Semi-monthly employees generally receive 24 paychecks, and monthly employees receive 12.
Your pay frequency changes the amount of money in each individual paycheck but does not change your annual salary.
Hourly Pay and Overtime
Hourly employees can enter their hourly wage and regular weekly hours. The calculator also provides an overtime field for estimation.
Actual overtime compensation and tax treatment can depend on federal requirements, employee classification and employer payroll policies. The calculator should therefore be used as an estimate rather than a payroll statement.
Pre-Tax and Post-Tax Deductions
Some employee deductions can reduce wages subject to certain taxes, while other deductions are taken after taxes have been calculated.
Examples can include qualifying retirement contributions, health insurance premiums and other employer-sponsored benefits. The actual tax treatment depends on the specific benefit and plan.
Why Your Actual Illinois Paycheck May Be Different
An online paycheck calculator cannot reproduce every detail of an employer’s payroll system.
Your actual paycheck may be different because of your federal Form W-4, Illinois withholding information, personal exemptions, benefits, retirement contributions, tax credits, bonuses and additional withholding.
Is Illinois a Flat-Tax State?
Yes. Illinois has a flat individual income-tax rate. For 2026, the rate is 4.95%.
However, the amount withheld from a paycheck is not simply 4.95% of gross salary in every situation because Illinois withholding calculations account for exemptions and other withholding rules.
