The Montana Paycheck Calculator helps employees estimate their take-home pay after federal income tax, Montana income tax, Social Security, Medicare and other deductions.

Montana’s 2026 individual income-tax system uses two ordinary-income rates. House Bill 337 lowered the top marginal rate beginning January 1, 2026.

House Bill 337 changed Montana’s individual income-tax brackets for tax year 2026. The highest marginal ordinary income-tax rate decreased from 5.9% to 5.65%. The lower 4.7% rate now applies to a larger amount of taxable income.

Montana Wage Withholding in 2026

The Montana Department of Revenue published updated 2026 wage withholding tables and an updated Form MW-4. The updated withholding system applies beginning January 1, 2026.

Montana says its 2026 wage-withholding calculation now closely resembles the federal method. The updated method uses the federal standard deduction amount associated with the employee’s federal filing status rather than the previous Montana allowance system.

Employers use Montana’s official withholding tables based on the payroll period, taxable earnings, filing status and other withholding information.

Montana Paycheck Taxes

A Montana employee’s paycheck can include several different taxes and deductions.

  • Federal income-tax withholding
  • Montana income-tax withholding
  • Social Security tax
  • Medicare tax
  • Employer benefit deductions
  • Retirement contributions
  • Other payroll deductions

Montana Standard Deduction and Taxable Income

Montana’s wage withholding calculation for 2026 uses the federal standard deduction amount associated with the employee’s federal filing status. Montana’s individual income-tax return can include additional Montana-specific adjustments and tax provisions.

Because a final Montana tax return can contain adjustments, credits and other items that do not appear on a simple paycheck calculator, this tool should be treated as an estimate rather than a substitute for an official tax return calculation.

Montana Long-Term Capital Gains

Long-term capital gains are treated differently from ordinary wage income under Montana’s tax system. The 2026 Montana tables list separate long-term capital gains rates of 3.0% and 4.1%, depending on the applicable income calculation.

This paycheck calculator does not calculate investment capital gains because it is designed primarily for wage and salary income.

Hourly Pay and Overtime

Hourly workers can enter their hourly wage, regular hours and overtime hours. The calculator estimates annual earnings using 52 weeks.

Actual overtime eligibility and overtime compensation depend on applicable federal and Montana employment rules and the employee’s circumstances.

Weekly, Biweekly and Monthly Paychecks

  • Weekly: 52 paychecks per year
  • Biweekly: 26 paychecks per year
  • Semi-monthly: 24 paychecks per year
  • Monthly: 12 paychecks per year
